North India shivers as snow covers most of upper reaches

The Normal life has been affected in the hilly northern states due to rain and snowfall. In Jammu and Kashmir, at least five inch snow was recorded in Srinagar city on Saturday. Met department says moderate rain and snow is likely at many places in the Kashmir valley today under the influence of Western Disturbance.

The cold wave has further intensified in Himachal Pradesh with several high altitude regions in Kullu, Chamba, Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti districts receiving fresh snowfall and rain. Keylong continued to be the coldest place in the state at minus 7 degree Celsius. IMD had sounded an ‘orange warning’ of heavy snowfall, rain and hailstorm in most parts of the state from January 4 to 6.

In Uttrakhand, cold wave has intensified in most parts of the State following fresh snowfall and light rains in the past 24 hours. Reports of snowfall has been received from Kedarnath, Badrinath, Hemkund Sahib, Gangotri, Auli, Harshil and Munsyari. Besides low temperature, the plain areas of the state are witnessing foggy conditions during early morning and night. 

The on-going cold conditions in Punjab and Haryana aggravated with minimum temperature hovering at 3.5 degrees Celsius at Narnaul, making it the coldest place in the region. Besides, several parts of the two states remained engulfed under a thick blanket of fog which adversely affected the air, rail and road traffic in the region.
