ASIAN GAMES: Neeraj Chopra wins gold in men’s javelin

Coming into the final, Neeraj had a personal best throw of 87.43m from May this year and his biggest competitor for the gold was expected to be Chinese Taipei’s Cheng Chao Tsun. But just one throw into Monday’s event and it became pretty evident that Neeraj was going to be the man to beat.

The 20-year-old first throw was a massive 83.46m and it put him way ahead of the rest of the field. As it turned out, only Neeraj would end up beating his own throw in this final.

With a career-best attempt of 88.06m, Neeraj not only broke his own personal record but also ensured himself a place in history.

India’s flag-bearer at the opening ceremony of the Games, Neeraj is a gold medallist from the Commonwealth Games earlier this year and broke into the scene only two years back when he broke the junior world record during the Under-20 World Championships.

The only Indian to ever win a medal in javelin at the Asian Games was Gurtej Singh who won a bronze at the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi.

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has Congratulated Neeraj Chopra on winning Gold in the Men’s Javelin Throw Final  at the 18th Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta… He tweeted..

When @Neeraj_chopra1 is on the field, expect the very best from him.

This youngster makes India happier by winning a Gold in the Men’s Javelin Throw Final. We also congratulate him for setting a new national record.
