The Central government has been taking steps consistently for the benefit of farmers.Wednesday saw the Modi government announce a major step to give relief to cane farmers.
The meeting of the union cabinet under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s chairmenship on Wednesday saw the Centre grant nearly 8,000 crore rupees as relief to sugar mills and cane farmers.
The cabinet’s decision is expected to benefit the entire sugar sector. It essentially has 3 components.Cane production is expected to be record breaking this year leading to surplus sugar production and decline in prices.
Sugar mills have therefore not been able to pay cane farmers dues.
This has prompted to govt to step in.Before the steps announced on Wednesday the Centre had given
— financial assistance to sugar mills at 5.50 rupees per quintal of cane crushed to offset the cost of cane
— A package of 1,540 crore rupees was given for this purpose
— Import controls on sugar have been tightened where custom duty has been raised twice to 100%
— Custom duty on export of sugar has been completely withdrawn
— Mill-wise quota for sugar export was also fixed for 20 lakh metric tonnes during 2017-18 sugar season
Cane farmers have expressed relief at government ‘s announcement.Clearly the government has time and again shown the willingness to go the extra mile for benefit of farmers.
Bringing them relief is in line with govt’s goal of doubling farm income by 2022.
