CJI case: Congress MPs’ withdraw petition challenging rejection of impeachment notice

A five-judge constitution bench of the Supreme Court was supposed to hear the petition.

The apex court dismissed the petitions of the two Rajya Sabha Congress Parliamentarians Pratap Singh Bajwa and Amee Harshadray Yajnik as withdrawn.

On April 24, Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu rejected the impeachment notice signed by 71 opposition MPs of the Upper House, against CJI, citing absence of any proved misbehaviour or incapacity on the part of the CJI.

In the petition challenging the rejection of impeachment notice against the CJI by the Rajya Sabha Chairman, the two MPs claimed that the reasons given were “wholly extraneous” and not legally tenable.

VP Naidu on 23rd of last month had rejected the impeachment notice of seven opposition parties led by the Congress.
