UN chief names new representative for Central Africa

United Nations, Oct 15 (IANS) UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Francois Lounceny Fall as his acting special representative for Central Africa and head of the UN Regional Office for Central Africa (UNOCA), a UN spokesman said.

“Fall succeeds Abdoulaye Bathily of Senegal, who will conclude his appointment on October 31,” the spokesman said at a daily news briefing here on Friday.

Fall has been serving as Vice-Chairman of the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission of the South Sudan Peace Agreement since January 2016.

“He brings extensive experience in the areas of politics and diplomacy, having supported political processes in Somalia, the Central African Republic and South Sudan,” the spokesman added.

He has also served as Foreign Minister of Guinea, and as special representative of the Secretary-General in Somalia (2005-2007) and the Central African Republic (2007-2008).

UNOCA was inaugurated in Libreville, Gabon, on March 2, 2011. It is mandated to assist member states and sub-regional organisations in consolidating peace and preventing future conflicts.
