Mumbai Police contacts Google, YouTube to block Tanmay Bhat’s video

NEW DELHI: Mumbai police has contacted Google and YouTube asking the companies to block self-professed comedian Tanmay Bhat’s latest Snapchat video – not because it’s mind-numbingly dull and extremely unfunny, but because many find it offensive.

The video features Bhat appearing as cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and as singer Lata Mangeshkar, both of whom are recpients of the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civiian award. In these two avatars, the cricketer and the singer talk to each other – well, they essentially hurl insults at each other – with Lata saying Sachin is a lesser batsman than Virat Kohli and with Sachin saying Lata is extremely old.

The video titled ‘Sachin vs Lata Civil War’ was posted on May 26 by Bhat, who’s part of a comedians’ collective called All India Bakchod (AIB).

After the Shiv Sena, the MNS Chitrapat Sena, the BJP and several celebrities criticized the video, the Mumbai Police’s Special Branch is also looking into police complaints filed against Bhat by the BJP in Maharashtra and by Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).

The Shiv Sena asked Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis to take strict action against Bhat. Former IPS officer YP Singh demanded custodial interrogation of Bhat for making fun of two of Maharashtra’s best known legends for what he called a cognizable offence.
