Wilson named new Chesterfield head coach

England football club Chesterfield has announced the appointment of Danny Wilson as their new head coach.

Wilson is a former Chesterfield player, making 100 league appearances as a midfielder between 1980 and 1983.

“I have many fond memories of my time at the club and after living in the area for over 30 years it’s a club I feel very attached to,” he said in a release on Thursday.

The 55-year-old has succeeded Dean Saunders, who was sacked in November after six months in charge of the League One side.

Wilson, who became the 24th person to reach 1,000 games in English football management in December last year, comes in to a side that reached the play-offs last season under Paul Cook, who was succeeded by Saunders.

Wilson, who left Barnsley in February, takes over a side 18th in League One, having lost their last six matches.

The length of contract for the former Sheffield United coach has not been disclosed, but it is beyond the end of the season.
