Tamil Nadu thumps Kerala

Tamil Nadu thumped Kerala 7-1 in a South Zone leg league fixture of the senior National women’s football championship at JJ CET here on Friday. It was the host’s second successive victory.

Tamil Nadu dominated the first half with its aggression and was also helped by some goalkeeping errors by Kerala. Skipper Kalpana’s left-footer rebounded off the hands of Kerala custodian Anjitha and Nandhini had little trouble opening the scoring in the 15th minute.

A minute later, Anjitha failed to gather Muthuselvi’s shot cleanly and the ensuing goalmouth melee saw Kalpana tap the ball in. Muthuselvi’s lobbed free-kick in the 33rd minute had Anjitha in dilemma about whether she should charge forward or hang back. The ball bounced in front of her and sailed over her head into the goal.

Kerala immediately substituted Anjitha with Anupama Saji but the side’s fortunes remained unchanged. Kalpana struck twice in the 39th and 41st, while Muthuselvi netted again in the injury-time as Tamil Nadu went into the break 6-0. Juki increased the lead in the 49th and Nikhila netted the consolation goal for Kerala in the 77th.

In another match, Indumathi scored four goals as Puducherry blanked Telangana 9-0. Indumathi netted as early as the first minute and Pradeepa scored two minutes later. Saranya (21st), Indumathi (34th) and Pradeepa (41st) struck to make it 5-0 at halftime. Puducherry players were in no mood to relax in the second session. Pradeepa (50th), Indumathi (51st & 64th), and Sandhiya (84th) scored as Puducherry scripted its third consecutive win.

On Sunday, Kerala will meet Puducherry, while Tamil Nadu will take on Karnataka.

The results: League: Puducherry 9 (Indumathi 1, 34, 51 & 64, Pradeepa 3, 41 & 50, Saranya 21, Sandhiya 84) bt Telangana 0; Tamil Nadu 7 (Nandhini 15, Kalpana 16, 39 & 41, Muthuselvi 33 & 45+1, Juki 49) bt Kerala 1 (Nikhila 77).
