J-K: Two militants, soldier killed in north Kashmir gun battle

Two militants and a soldier were killed in a gun battle that broke out on Friday between militants and security forces in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

Security forces launched an anti-militancy operation in Wadder Bala village of Handwara in Kupwara following information that three to four heavily armed militants were in the area, a police official said.

Reports also indicated that a soldier was injured. The operation was underway till the last reports came in.

The incident came after an infiltration attempt in which three terrorists were gunned down along the LoC in Poonch sector Thursday evening.

Last month three heavily-armed militants stormed an army camp in Tangdhar near the LoC in Kupwara district, triggering a fierce gunfight in which all the attackers were killed.

The recent spike in violence in the militancy-hit state came against the backdrop of a sharp downturn in relations between India and Pakistan following the cancellation of talks between the national security advisers in August.

India has insisted that Pakistan must address the issue of terrorism to create grounds for the resumption of bilateral talks.
