The names of seven people killed when a helicopter crashed on Fox Glacier on Saturday have been released.
They were Mitchell Paul Gameren of Queenstown, 28, Andrew Virco of Cambridge in England, 50, Katharine Walker of Cambridge in England, 51, Nigel Edwin Charlton of Hampshire, 66, Cynthia Charlton of Hampshire, 70, Leang Sovannmony of South Australia, 27, and Josephine Gibson of South Australia, 29.
Katharine Walker was the head of Radiotherapy at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.
According to the hospital’s website, Walker said she’d worked there for 23 years.
Recovery teams were winched the site of Fox Glacier helicopter crash earlier on Sunday.
Police confirmed that recovery of the seven victims had begun. Some of the bodies were removed before the weather closed in, but West Coast Inspector John Canning, of Greymouth, declined to say how many.
Canning said the forecast was for severe weather for the next 24 hours.
“While it is fine down here, the weather has turned bad at the top of the glacier.” he said.
