At least 62 killed as crane crashes into Mecca’s Grand Mosque

At least 62 people were killed when a crane crashed in Mecca’s Grand Mosque on Friday, Saudi Arabia’s civil defence authority said on its Twitter account, an accident that came just weeks before the Muslim annual haj pilgrimage.

Pictures circulating on social media showed pilgrims in bloodied robes and masses of debris from a part of the crane that seemed to have crashed through a ceiling.

The incident occurred as hundreds of thousands of Muslims gather from all over the world for the annual haj pilgrimage set to begin later this month.
