Legendary footballer Pele will make his maiden visit to the Capital where he will be the guest of honour of the Subroto Cup final here on October 16.
Pele, who turns 75 on October 23, will be returning to India after 1977 when he played an exhibition match as part of New York Cosmos against Mohun Bagan in Kolkata.
The Indian Air Force, organisers of the Subroto Cup, made the announcement regarding Pele’s proposed visit here on Monday. However, the IAF officers refrained from sharing concrete plans surrounding his visit.
In fact, Santos FC, where Pele played for nearly two decades, is part of the field for this year’s Subroto Cup that begins on September 11.
Pele is due to be in the country between October 11 and 17. It is learnt that he will be the guest of honour during Atletico de Kolkata’s inaugural match of the Indian Super League (ISL) in Kolkata.
In his audio-visual message to the organisers of the Subroto Cup, Pele said he was excited to return to India after nearly 40 years. “I look forward to attending the Subroto Cup, the largest young football tournament in Asia.”
He hailed the contribution of the IAF which “has worked very hard to support the community and to grow the beautiful game.” He concluded by saying, “I am looking forward to meeting new generation of fans.”
