River Ganga has been facing serious threat due to discharge of increasing quantities of sewage effluents, trade effluents and other pollutants on account of rapid urbanization and industrialization. National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA) has been constituted by Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Government of India vide notification no. SO 2539 (E) dated 29th September, 2014. National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has been established inter-alia to implement the work program of NGRBA in accomplishing the mandate of NGRBA, to coordinate and oversee the implementation of action plans for ensuring effective abatement of pollution and rejuvenation of the river Ganga. NMCG is consolidating and coordinating all ongoing efforts and planning in respect of river Ganga in order to achieve and maintain the prescribed environmental standards and has established State Program Management Group (SPMGs) to co-ordinate the efforts with the concerned State Governments.
With a view to take remedial measures for preventing, controlling and abating pollution in river Ganga and in view of the orders / directions issued, from time to time, by the Supreme Court of India and National Green Tribunal, it is necessary and expedient for the identified municipalities/ urban local bodies and industries, who are discharging sewage/ trade effluent, to prepare necessary action plans with specific time bound actions.
