Cabinet approves ordinance route for Land Acquisition Act

According to the proposed Land Acquisition Bill, consent of at least 80 percent of the land owners is required for any private project. If the land is to be developed under public-private partnership (PPP), 70 percent consent from landowners is required.

The Union Cabinet Monday approved a proposal to take the ordinance route to amend the Land Acquisition Act to boost stalled projects worth hundreds of billions of dollars.

According to the proposed Land Acquisition Bill, consent of at least 80 percent of the land owners is required for any private project. If the land is to be developed under public-private partnership (PPP), 70 percent consent from landowners is required.

However, government projects do not require land owners’ consent. Most private players, however, feel getting consent of atleast 80 percent land owners will be difficult. Though if the Bill is passed, it will come as a major relief to most.
