SCR plans to operate Airport Special trains

The South Central Railway (SCR) is planning to operate  ‘Airport Specials’ to provide direct rail connectivity from major terminals of Lingampalli and Secunderabad to Umdanagar, which is the nearest rail head to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) at Shamshabad.

In this connection, according to a press release, SCR general manager, PK Srivastava, held a review meeting on Wednesday and directed the officials to prepare a detailed plan of running DEMU (diesel electric multiple unit) trains as airport specials, duly matching with the peak air traffic timings at RGIA.

To enable passengers to travel from Umdanagar station to the airport, Srivastava stated, feeder bus services needed to be arranged in coordination with the road transport authorities. Necessary facilities such as wide circulating area, parking and waiting area were being planned to be developed at the station, which is 6 km from the airport.

To begin with, Srivastava said, a few DEMU train services will be planned as airport specials on an experimental basis after discussing with the state government officials.
