To finalise the site for establishment of proposed Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Odisha, a central team is likely to arrive in the state on December 23.
“A team headed by Amarjeet Sinha, additional secretary in the Union government with director of IIM Kolkata and others will visit the state in the last week of December, after the parliament session is over. They will visit the shortlisted sites,” said Chandrasekhar Kumar, secretary, employment and technical education & training department.
If they are satisfied with the site proposals, they will approve it, he added.
Recently, the state government had intimated the Union ministry of human resource development (HRD) on its decision to set up the proposed IIM in Bhubaneswar.
In the letter to the ministry, the state government had said, it has selected two sites on the capital city’s outskirts – one at Gothapatna, where International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) is located and the other near Argul, close to the permanent campus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), for establishment of the premier management institute.
The state government has zeroed in on the locations on the basis of availability of infrastructural facilities like international airport and express train connectivity, as desired by the HRD ministry.
Earlier this year, the state government had identified 12 locations in six districts as possible sites for the IIM. Later as pressure mounted from various civil society organisations and political leaders from backward areas to establish the institute in their respective areas, the government had to form a panel to decide on the location. But when the HRD ministry insisted that the proposed IIM must be located within one hour drive from the airport, the state government selected Bhubaneswar as the prime location.
