Uber, Ola, TaxiForSure continue to operate in Delhi despite ban

Despite the Delhi Transport Department’s ban on app-based taxi services like Uber, Ola Cabs and TaxiForSure starting late Monday evening, all the operators are continuing to ply normally in the national capital region today.

“We are continuing with the services since our drivers have not been stopped by the police,” a source at TaxiForSure said. “Unless our drivers are stopped or asked questions, we will maintain status quo on our services.”

Uber’s low-cost option, UberX was available for a ride in east Delhi around noon on Tuesday, while cabs were available at several locations across New Delhi on Ola Cabs’ mobile application.

The ban had been implemented in reaction to a rape incident that rocked the national capital over the weekend. The state’s authorities have banned all taxi service providers who use web-based technology and do not have the requisite permits from the authorities.

As of now, the Delhi Transport Authority has only allowed six taxi companies – Easy Cab, Mega Cab, Meru Cab, Chanson Cab, Yo Cab and Air Cab to operate, because they are licensed with the Transport Department for ‘Radio Taxis’ in the National Capital Region.

Additionally, other states are taking measures to ensure such incidents are not repeated. Karnataka transport department has called a meeting with several stakeholders of the taxi industry, including players like Uber, Meru, Ola Cabs and TaxiForSure in Bengaluru today afternoon to take stock of the passenger security measures that are being used and share suggestions on what all must be done in this regard.
