Medical Test of Women Boxers

The Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs and Sports Shri Sarbananda Sonowal has said that for participation in Womens World Boxing Championship, 2014 held at Jeju Islands, South Korea, the International Boxing Federation (AIBA) prescribed a number of requirements to be met by women boxers. Non-pregnancy form issued by a medical doctor was one of the requirements.

In a written reply in the Lok Sabha today Shri Sonowal said, the Boxers were aware of the need for Non-Pregnancy Certificate and requested the team Coaches & Chief Coach to arrange for the test, as they were unaware of the place to undergo this test. The Chief Coach appointed by Boxing India thus requested Sports Authority of India (SAI) to arrange for the test. The test was facilitated by SAI on receipt of written request from the Chief Coach of Boxing India, supported by written request from the boxers, followed by individual consent form from the boxers who were to participate in the competition. The test was conducted through collection of urine samples which was non-invasive. There was no violation of any law.
