President Pranab Mukherjee’s yet-to-be released book- “The Dramatic Decade: The Years of Indira Gandhi” -is among the top five bestsellers’ list on Amazon, while it is still in the pre-order stage. The book will be released on President’s birthday on December 11 and will be exclusively sold on Amazon till end of 2014.
During pre-booking, only one book can be ordered by a buyer on Amazon.
Although this is not the first time that a book is being exclusively pre-booked and sold on any e-commerce platform, the initial interest in Mukherjee’s work seems to be quite significant.
Mukherjee, also fondly called Poltu in his village in Bengal, is generating more hits among the online buyers leaving behind the works of APJ Abdul Kalam (former President of India) in 15th position, Hillary Clinton (Former United States Secretary of State) below 300th, and Vinod Rai (former CAG ) at 67th.
The book focuses on the challenging decade of the 1970s, including the Emergency imposed by the Indira Gandhi government.
According to Ritu Vajpayee Mohan of Rupa Publications, keeping the book away from offline stores and exclusively on Amazon is a safe move, given the kind of response to high profile launches. “President’s name is of course is a big draw but even in the case of Vinod Rai’s book we had seen skyrocketing enthusiasm among readers on the e route,” Mohan said, adding that the publisher is ambitious about the number of copies that can be sold once the book is available for sale from next Thursday.
“Books are one of the fastest growing categories on Amazon.in and continue to receive an overwhelming response from customers. Just yesterday, our daily order rate had jumped by four times after the campaign went live, ” said Samir Kumar, director- category management at Amazon India.
Details of the book launch are still being kept under the wraps but Mukherjee might bring in a surprise with some sort of involvement with the book launch on December 11, sources said.
Before assuming the President’s office on July 25, 2012, Mukherjee, recipient of the Padma Vibhushan in 2008, was seen as a key troubleshooter for Congress. Mukherjee has held key portfolios in government ministries and departments including foreign, defence, commerce and finance. He has also been deputy chairman of the Planning Commission.
