Core sector output accelerates to 6.3% in October

India’s eight key infrastructure sectors grew at an impressive annual rate of 6.3% in October, compared with 1.9% the previous month, raising hopes of better industrial production. Growth in October was mainly driven by a surge in coal production, electricity generation and refinery products.

During the month, coal production grew 16.2% over that in October 2013, electricity generation by 13.2% and output of petroleum refinery products by 4.2%, according to data released by the Commerce Ministry on Monday.

Among sectors that saw contraction during the month, fertilisers registered the biggest fall of 7%, natural gas by 4.2% and cement by 1%.

Steel and crude oil production showed marginal improvement in October, growing 2.3% and 1%, respectively.

In October last year, output of the core sectors had contracted 0.6% due to a massive drop in production of natural gas and refinery products.
