Coalgate u-turn: CBI says have proof against Birla, Parakh

In a major u-turn, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which had on October 21 told the Supreme Court it had no prima facie evidence against industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla and former coal secretary PC Parakh in the allocation of two coal blocks, has today said it has evidence against the accused, reports CNBC-TV18’s Ashmit Kumar.

The Supreme Court had pulled up the federal investigative agency for showing “unwarranted haste” when it had filed a closure report against the two. Following that, the special prosecutor for the agency today told the court there is a prima facie case against the two.

The matter pertains to allocation of coal blocks in 2005, in which the screening committee had disallowed awarding the block to Hindalco but subsequently, according to CBI, was given to the company following a meeting between Birla and Parakh.

More clarity is expected on November 25 when the special court will take up the matter to take cognizance of this revised position that the CBI has now presented.
