Prime Minister Modi to host global CEOs at ‘Davos of the East’

In what could further portray Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s as an emerging world leader, for the first time, the PM will be hosting chief executive officers (CEOs) from Fortune 500 companies across the globe in a Davos-like ‘Global CEO Conclave’ in January 2015 in Gujarat.

Invitations for the conclave have been sent to executives at organisations like Samsung, Hyundai, LG, HP, General Motors and GE, among others, and confirmations are likely to begin pouring in by next week. The conclave will be held on January 11, 2015 as part of the seventh edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Summit which is being showcased as the ‘Davos of the East’ this time. For the first time, PM Modi will be seen interacting and addressing not only global CEOs but also other world leaders such as from UN, IMF, World Bank, ASEAN, ADB and Bill Clinton Foundation, apart from Nobel laureates and global economists, among others on a single platform. The conclave will be held at the Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) at Gandhinagar in Gujarat at around 5 pm after the inaugural session of Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2015.

What’s more, instead of investments, the CEO conclave will focus on discussions about global issues such as climate change, sustainable development and new millennium goals for corporations and governments alike. The Government of Gujarat is also working on setting up a specific theme for the conclave.

“We will not focus on investments for the Global CEO Conclave. It will be an extension to the Vibrant Gujarat Summit and for the first time will provide a global platform like Davos for the PM to interact with world leaders. We have also requested the PM to host dinner for the global leaders post the conclave and we are awaiting his approval,” said a senior Gujarat government.

Mooted by PM Modi about 3-4 months ago, the conclave got a nod from the PMO only on October 31, following which invitations have begun going out to invitee CEOs.

“We want the event to emerge as a platform to discuss global issues. We are portraying it as the Davos of the East and carrying it forward and making it a global issues networking platform for deliberations on global issues,” the official further stated.

It needs to be mentioned here that earlier, during his days as Chief Minister of Gujarat, PM Modi had likened the Vibrant Gujarat Summit as “Davos in action”.
