Devendra Fadnavis elected as Maharashtra Chief Minister

Fadnavis is scheduled to meet the Governor later in the day to stake claim to form the government in the state.

State chief of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Devendra Fadnavis has been unanimously elected by the party MLAs to be Maharashtra’s next Chief Minister. His name was proposed by senior party leader Eknath Khadse who had also earlier claimed to be in the race for the CM’s post.

His name was seconded by party leaders Vinod Tawde, Mungatiwar and Pankaja Munde. The decision was taken at a meeting of the party MLAs at the at the Vidhan Bhavan on Tuesday evening.

Soon after the decision, Home Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted making the decision public. “Devendra Phadnavis has been unanimously elected as the Leader of the BJP Legislature Party in Maharashtra Vidhansahbha,” he tweeted.

Fadnavis is scheduled to meet the Governor later in the day to stake claim to form the government in the state.

BJP central observers Rajnath Singh and JP Nadda had been in Mumbai to meet the party’s 123 legislators to avoid any rift within the party as there were more than one chief ministerial claimants in the fray.

Senior leaders Eknath Khadse, Pankaja Munde and Nitin Gadkari loyalists had pitched themselves for the top post.
