Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has announced an interim assistance Rs 1,000 crore for Andhra Pradesh for undertaking relief and rehabilitation measures in the cyclone affected areas of the state.
The Prime Minister, who visited Visakhapatnam on Wednesday to assess the situation personally, said that Hudhud cyclone had caused extensive damage and assured the Centre’s help in mitigating the plight of people.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who has been camping in Visakhapatanam to oversee relief operations, said that the damage caused by the cyclone was huge. The Eastern Power Distribution Company, which supplies power to Vizag and other areas, alone was estimated have incurred a loss of Rs 40,000 crore. Over 6,000 transformers and 16,000 electric poles have been uprooted by heavy gales.
Naidu said that, as per preliminary estimates, the loss suffered by Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Indian Navy and airport would be Rs 1,000 crore, Rs 2,000 crore and Rs 500 crore respectively.
