Brand matters in hiring, shows survey

Education NewsChennai: Brand name matters. A survey by the British Council has shown that 51% of companies hire only from the top 20 Indian institutions, and less than a quarter of these firms hire only from the top 10 in any discipline. The India Employability Survey 2014, released on Tuesday, is based on a survey of 200 human resources personnel and staffing directors of leading foreign and Indian companies and inputs from a panel discussion. The report examines the quality of talent coming into Indian industry in the next three to five years, and has looked at the current employability of workforces emerging from foreign universities.

The study shows that 60% of companies that hire candidates who have studied overseas recruit only from the top 50 ranked universities across the world. Of this, close to a third hire only from the world’s 10 highly ranked institutions. As much as 41% of the companies surveyed have hired at least one foreign university graduate in the last two years. Far more graduates from foreign universities are deemed better prepared for the job, than those from Indian universities and require lesser extensive training, a release from British Council said, pointing out the results of the study.

Rob Lynes, director, British Council India, said, “Hiring foreign university graduates is an integral part of the talent plan for a large percentage of companies.” Companies dealing with consumer goods, services, and infrastructure, telecom and energy firms are the most likely to have hired at least one candidate with a foreign degree, while industrial and IT companies are the least likely to have done so. Recruiters rank educational institutions in the US, the UK and Germany as the best. The study recommends that students take internships seriously to bridge the existing gap between what is being taught in college and what companies look for in candidates. “Seek out work experience before, during and after academic years to gain a faster fillip once industry absorbs you as fresh talent,” the study advises students. The report mentions that two-thirds of firms have an internship programme of some kind, and that 57% of firms plan to have one soon.

Recruiters have said that subject knowledge related to the job is ranked the most important skills followed by communication skills, the ability to apply knowledge to solve real world issues and critical thinking skills. Interpersonal skills and the ability to work with diverse groups of people, leadership experience and the ability and willingness to work hard are sought after qualities
