CAT registration hits all time low

Education NewsHyderabad: The number of registrations for the Common Admission Test (CAT) has marked an all time low this year. Till the last date of registration i.e. September 30, 1, 89,759 candidates have registered for the test against the 1.95 lakh registrations of last year. Although 13 new Indian Institute of Managements would start functioning from 2015-16 academic year, registrations saw a decline of around six thousand.

In 2008, the test received record number of applications of about 2.76 lakh when the test was paper and pencil based. Ever, since the test switched to computer based test in 2009, the number of registrations witnessed up and downs.

Not just decline in registrations, the number of colleges accepting CAT score for management admissions also decreased. Now 90 colleges will accept the score this year, instead of 150 colleges a few years ago.

Management experts say that the students were getting attracted to the international MBA programmes. The decline in the non-IIMs accepting the CAT score for the admissions could also be a possible reason for the decrease in the applications. They also said that high fee structure of course and non-international recognition of the programme could be other factors that lead to decline.

For the second consecutive year, the Indian Institute of Management-Indore has been entrusted to conduct the examination. It had brought sea changes in the question paper pattern from this year. According to the new pattern, the aspirants have to answer 50 questions in quantitative ability and data interpretation, verbal ability and logical reasoning instead of 30 questions. The test duration was increased from 140 minutes to 170 minutes.

When asked whether the change in pattern affected the registrations, Ramnath Kanakadandi, National Course director (CAT) TIME, said that change in the pattern had no role in the decrease in the applications.
