Wipro to train engineers, science graduates in analytics

Education NewsBangalore: Third-largest IT company Wipro has launched a postgraduate programme in analytics for the 2014 batch of engineering and science graduates hired by the company. It has launched WiSTA — data scientist programme in India in association with the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT). The institute will conduct the programme and award master of technology and Master of Science degrees in analytics.

The WiSTA — data scientist programme is an initiative aimed at creating industry-ready data scientists within Wipro in the information management and analytics space. These data scientists will work with Wipro’s customers in the US and other international locations.

“Capturing new opportunities in the digital world hinges on our ability to have the best people in the industry?. This will be achieved by offering the talent pool projects which excite and stimulate their intelligent minds. We believe investing in creating the frameworks to nurture the resources of the future will be in the best interests of our clients and the industries we operate in. It is an exciting program.” said Jeff Heenan-Jalil, senior vice-president and global head in advanced technologies and solutions in Wipro. In the US alone, there is shortage of 1.4-1.9 lakh analytics professionals. The US also requires 1.5 million managers and analysts who can analyze big data and make decisions said a recent report.

This course, taught over weekends at Wipro’s corporate headquarters in Bangalore, comprises of various modules on analytics and is a two-year program for the engineering graduates and a four-year program for science graduates. Students are shortlisted for this program based on their previous academic performance and college ranking. The course content has been jointly created by Wipro and VIT and also includes modules prescribed and taught by professors from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and University of Michigan. Along with a masters’ degree from VIT on completion of this course, the graduates will also receive program completion certificates from MIT and the University of Michigan for the modules covered by them.
