Delivering the fourth annual convocation address of Nitte University at Deralakatte near here on Saturday, Dr Vedprakash Mishra, also the chairman of MCI’s academic committee said the standing mechanism has been put into place for updating syllabi of undergraduate, postgraduate and super speciality courses in a periodic manner so as to make them ‘relevant, timely and purposive’ as well. As on August 31, there are 391 medical schools in India.
Noting this brings out the fact that nearly 13.5% of global medical schools are in India, he said in terms of ‘Delhi declaration’ at the platinum jubilee celebration of MCI, a ‘National faculty development programme’ has been undertaken for update of medical teachers of India in regard to medical education technology as a whole with emphasis on core concept of adult learning and incorporation of innovations in teaching-learning and assessment process as a whole.
As part of actualization of this programme, MCI through its academic committee has structured basic course on medical education technology to be conducted institutionally by medical education unit of each medical college. Mid-level courses are to be conducted by 11 nodal centres that MCI has identified in different regions of the country and the apical course to be conducted by the apical centre in the medical council itself.
The entire programme is articulated for ‘training of trainers’ so as to ensure transformation of an ‘efficient’ teacher into an ‘effective’ teacher as an exercise aiming at ‘capacity building of the capacity builders’. The Council has also undertaken the exercise of rationalization of the minimum requirements for starting of medical colleges and also their equitable geographical location, so that the aspirations of all the parts of the country are equitable met.
