A Manipur sessions court today ordered the release of Manipur activist Irom Sharmila saying there is lack of evidence against her for charges of attempted suicide.

She has been on an indefinite hunger strike since November 3, 2000 protesting against Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), which she wants repealed.

Owing to her ill health, Sharmila is currently lodged in a special ward of the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal where she is confined to one room.
