Two engineers die at RINL Vizag plant

Two engineers of a private agency died after an “incident” at state-run Rashtriya Ispat Nigam’s steel-making facility here on Monday.

The Vizag Steel Plant management and the agency are looking into detailed reasons for the incident, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL) said.

RINL stated engineers Anush Bhaskar and Rajneesh Singh, working with SMS Seimag India Ltd, “were found collapsed while carrying out an inspection job in a container laboratory handled by the agency in the expansion area”.

They went inside the lab at 10.20 am as part of the routine inspection of the progress in work, according to the statement.

“Once it was noticed that they had collapsed, they were rushed to Visakha Steel General Hospital. Doctors at the hospital declared one of them brought dead and other died while undergoing treatment,” RINL said.

This is the second time in less than a week that a state-owned steel company has reported loss of lives. Five Steel Authority of India employees and one contract worker died at the Bhilai plant in Chhattisgarh due to a gas leak on Thursday.

SMS Seimag India is the contracting agency executing the steel melting shop-II project work as part of RINL’s current expansion.

RINL’s Vizag facility has a capacity of 2.9 million tonnes per annum and the company is enhancing it to 6.3 million tonnes per annum.

“The unit where the incident occurred is under the control of SMS Seimag India and is yet to be handed over to the company,” RINL said in the statement.

The company said all gas lines of the network of the unit were in working condition and were in a closed state only while the incident took place.

“Absolutely no openings were found in the main gas distribution lines. Gas lines and all connected valves were in closed condition and were fully intact during the occurrence of incident as informed by company officials,” it said.

RINL has reported 36 deaths due to fatal accidents in the past three years – eight in 2011, 25 in 2012 and three in 2013. There were 46 minor accidents in the plant in 2011, 33 in 2012, 20 in 2013 and four till January this year.
