Today is Michael Jackson’s 55th birthday. Even though the King of Pop died 4 years ago at the age of 50, Twitter was full of birthday greetings and retrospectives of the late singer.

Michael Joseph Jackson was born Aug. 29, 1958 and He died June 25, 2009, at the age of 50.

Though his sudden death from cardiac arrest caused by a lethal combination of prescription drugs shocked friends, family and fans, his iconic legacy has continued to live on in the entertainment industry.

Today (August 29) the singer would have turned 55. Throughout his career he changed his infamous style constantly.

Jackson won eight Grammy’s in 1984 – this is the highest number ever won by a single person in one year. He was only five when he gave his first public performance – and sang ‘Climb Every Mountain’. Selling an estimated 50 million copies worldwide, ‘Thriller’ remains the world’s best-selling record of all time.

Michael Jackson’s first marriage lasted only 19 months – he was married to Lisa Marie Presley. He had two kids with his second wife Deborah Jeanne Rowe – Michael Joseph Jackson Junior (also known as Prince) and a daughter, Paris Michael Katherine Jackson. His second marriage with Rowe ended in 1999. Jackson got full custody rights of the children.
