The New York-based International Rescue Committee (IRC) confirmed Tuesday  that five Afghan staff members, all men in their 20s, were taken hostage on  Sunday and killed by their captors the following day.

Hamid Karzai, Afghan President has condemned the killing of twelve civilians in two separate attacks in Afghanistan. Six people were killed in eastern Paktia province and Six were abducted and shot dead in western Herat province.

Also Mr Karzai blamed the Taliban for the attacks and said Pakistan had failed to use its influence to bring the Taliban to join peace talks. In condemning the killings, he made a veiled reference to the widespread  belief that elements in Pakistan support and shelter the Islamist militants.

In a separate incident, a would-be suicide bomber was shot dead by security  guards in Kabul on Tuesday evening when he tried to attack a government  ministry. One civilian was injured, officials said.
